What Does a Home Battery Backup System Do?

A home battery backup system stores electricity and automatically delivers it to your home when the grid goes down. Unlike a gas generator, it switches on in milliseconds — silently, with no fuel to buy and no exhaust.

Modern home batteries like the Tesla Powerwall are installed on your wall, connected to your electrical panel, and monitored through a smartphone app. When the grid fails, your home keeps running.

Beyond outage protection, batteries also reduce your SDG&E bill by storing cheap solar or off-peak power and using it during expensive peak rate hours.

How Batteries Work With Solar

Solar and battery storage are designed to work together — but you can have either one without the other.

SHS Power battery installation San Diego
1

Solar Generates Power

Your panels produce electricity during the day. Your home uses what it needs in real time.

2

Excess Charges Battery

Any solar power your home doesn't immediately use gets stored in your battery instead of sent to the grid.

3

Battery Powers You at Night

After sunset — during SDG&E's most expensive peak hours — you draw from stored solar instead of the grid.

Already have solar? You can add battery storage as a standalone upgrade — we handle the interconnection paperwork and electrical work. No need to modify your existing panels.

Designed to Save Money First — With Backup Power Built In

For many of our customers, the main reason to install a battery is simple: lower the monthly electric bill. Battery storage allows your home to use stored energy during the most expensive parts of the day instead of buying peak-rate power from the grid. For solar customers, this helps you get more value from the energy your system already produces.

Backup power is the added bonus. When the grid goes down, your battery can keep selected circuits, essential appliances, or even your whole home powered depending on system size and design.

That means your battery is working for you every day to reduce costs, while also standing by as protection during outages. That is the real value of a well-designed battery system: daily savings plus energy security.

Where Most Customers Fall on the Battery Spectrum — Bill Savings First, Bill Savings + Backup, Overbuilt/Off-Grid

Not every homeowner has the same goal when adding battery storage. Some are focused primarily on lowering their monthly electric bill and getting the fastest return on investment. Others want a balanced system that provides meaningful monthly savings while also giving them dependable backup power when the grid goes down. And for some customers, the priority is maximum energy independence with a larger, more heavily backed-up system. At SHS Power, we help design the right system around your goals, your usage, and how much backup protection you actually want.

Whole-Home vs. Partial-Home Backup

The right choice depends on how long outages last in your area and which loads matter most to you.

Partial-Home Backup

Most popular choice · 1–2 batteries

Powers your critical circuits only — refrigerator, lighting, outlets, medical equipment, router, phone chargers. The right call for most San Diego homeowners where outages are typically short.

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Faster installation
  • Longer backup runtime on critical loads
  • Still protects food, lights, and devices

Whole-Home Backup

Maximum protection · 2–4+ batteries

Every circuit in your home stays on. Air conditioning, EV charger, washer/dryer, everything. Ideal for households with medical equipment, home offices, or in wildfire-prone areas with extended PSPS outages.

  • Complete outage protection
  • Air conditioning included
  • No lifestyle changes during an outage
  • Best for wildfire / PSPS risk areas

Protection From SDG&E Rate Spikes

SDG&E has some of the highest electricity rates in the country — and they continue to rise. Under NEM 3.0 and time-of-use rates, the hours between 4–9 PM are the most expensive.

A battery storage system charges during cheap off-peak hours (or from solar during the day) and discharges during expensive peak hours. Many San Diego homeowners see their evening grid draw drop to near zero.

Combined with solar, a properly sized battery can reduce a large portion of your evening grid usage and may significantly lower your SDG&E bill, depending on your rate plan, system size, and consumption habits.

SDG&E Peak Hours

Super Off-Peak · 12 AM – 6 AM
Cheapest — ideal to charge battery from grid
Off-Peak · 6 AM – 4 PM
Solar production hours — charge battery from panels
On-Peak · 4 PM – 9 PM
Most expensive — discharge battery, avoid grid
Off-Peak · 9 PM – 12 AM
Rates drop — grid use is more affordable

How Many Batteries Does a San Diego Home Need?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer. We size every system based on your actual utility data.

Why Installation Quality Matters

A battery is only as good as how it's installed. Poor wiring, undersized conduit, or incorrect programming will compromise performance and safety.

Permits & Inspection

Every SHS Power battery installation is permitted and inspected by the city or county. This protects your home, your warranty, and your homeowner's insurance.

Proper Load Analysis

We calculate exactly which loads your battery will support and configure the transfer switch and gateway accordingly. No guessing.

Clean Electrical Work

Our crews are electricians, not just solar guys. Every conduit run, breaker connection, and ground is done to NEC code.

System Programming

We configure time-of-use settings, backup reserves, and export settings to maximize bill savings and backup duration for your specific SDG&E rate schedule.

Warranty Protection

Manufacturer warranties require licensed, permitted installation. We provide all documentation you need to file a warranty claim if one ever arises.

Local Support

We're a San Diego company. If something needs attention after installation, we're a phone call away — not a 1-800 number in another state.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a battery backup power my home?

It depends on your system size and which loads are backed up. A single 13.5 kWh battery running essential loads (lights, refrigerator, phone chargers, a few outlets) typically lasts 12–24 hours. Whole-home backup with air conditioning may last 6–10 hours. Multiple batteries can extend this significantly.

Do I need solar to get a battery backup?

No. A battery can be installed as a standalone backup system that charges from the grid. However, pairing it with solar means your battery recharges every day from sunlight — giving you indefinite backup capability as long as the sun shines.

What is whole-home vs. partial-home backup?

Whole-home backup powers every circuit in your house when the grid goes down. Partial-home backup powers only selected critical circuits (refrigerator, lights, outlets, medical equipment). Partial backup requires fewer batteries and costs less — it's the right choice for most homeowners.

How does a battery protect against SDG&E rate spikes?

SDG&E's time-of-use rates charge significantly more during peak hours (typically 4–9 PM). A battery charges from solar or cheap off-peak grid power during the day, then discharges during the expensive evening hours — reducing or eliminating your peak-hour usage.

How many batteries does a typical San Diego home need?

For partial-home backup: 1–2 batteries (13–27 kWh). For whole-home backup including AC: 2–4 batteries depending on home size and usage. We size every system to your actual consumption data — we never over-sell.

What does installation involve?

We handle everything: system design, permits with your city or county, electrical work, battery installation, utility interconnection paperwork (if solar is involved), and system commissioning. Most installations are completed in one day.
